J.D. Power and Associates Reports: Overall Vehicle Dependability Improves Substantially, Reflecting High Quality.

J.D. Power and Associates Reports:
Overall Vehicle Dependability Improves Substantially, Reflecting High Quality of 2009 Models; However, Perceptions of Dependability for Certain Brands Continue to Lag

Toyota Motor Corporation Models Receive Eight Awards, While Models from Ford Motor Company Receive Three Awards

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif.: 15 February 2012 ? Strong initial quality of 2009 model-year vehicles?which were produced during one of the toughest years for the automotive industry?has translated into historically high levels of vehicle dependability in 2012, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2012 U.S. Vehicle Dependability StudySM (VDS) released today.

The study measures problems experienced during the past 12 months by original owners of three-year-old (2009 model-year) vehicles. Overall dependability is determined by the level of problems experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100), with a lower score reflecting higher quality.

In 2012, overall vehicle dependability averages 132 PP100?an improvement of 13 percent from the 2011 average of 151?which is the lowest problem rate since the inception of the study in 1990. The strong dependability of these models reflects their high levels of initial quality when measured three years ago. According to the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Initial Quality Study,SM overall initial quality of 2009 model-year vehicles was, at the time, the highest level of initial quality since the inaugural IQS in 1987.

Fully 25 of 32 brands have improved in dependability from 2011, while only six have declined and one has remained stable. Domestic nameplates have improved in 2012 at a slightly faster rate than imports, narrowing the dependability gap to 13 PP100 from 18 PP100 in 2011.

"Despite facing immense challenges in 2009, automakers placed a keen focus on delivering outstanding levels of quality, which they understood would be essential to their long-term success," said David Sargent, vice president of global automotive at J.D. Power and Associates. "Three years later, owners of these models are enjoying unprecedented levels of vehicle dependability and manufacturers are experiencing market recovery. This is good news both for owners?who are holding onto their vehicles for longer than ever?and manufacturers, since perception of quality and dependability is a critical factor in vehicle purchase decisions."

However, according to Sargent, there are several brands that have performed very well in dependability during the past several years but still face challenges with customer perceptions of their reliability. In particular, during the past four years, models from Buick, Cadillac, Ford, Hyundai and Lincoln have achieved consistently strong levels of dependability, but still have relatively high proportions of new-vehicle buyers expressing reliability concerns.1

"Building vehicles with high levels of dependability is obviously a necessary element in reshaping consumer perceptions," said Sargent. "Negative quality perceptions are notoriously difficult to change, and it takes considerable time, but effectively communicating improvements in dependability may reduce concerns, and by extension, help new-vehicle sales."

Highest-Ranked Nameplates and Models
Lexus ranks highest in vehicle dependability among all nameplates in 2012. In addition, the Lexus LS has the fewest problems in the industry, with just 72 PP100. Rounding out the five highest-ranking nameplates are Porsche, Cadillac, Toyota and Scion, respectively. MINI and Scion post the greatest year-over-year improvements from 2011?by 60 PP100 and 55 PP100, respectively.

Toyota Motor Corporation continues to perform well in long-term dependability and garners eight segment awards?more than any other automaker in 2012?for the Lexus ES 350 (in a tie with the Lincoln MKZ); Lexus RX 350; Scion tC; Scion xB; Toyota Prius; Toyota Sienna; Toyota Tundra; and Toyota Yaris.

Ford Motor Company receives three model awards for the Ford Explorer (in a tie with the Nissan Murano); Ford Fusion; and Lincoln MKZ (in a tie). General Motors (Buick Lucerne and Chevrolet Equinox) and Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. (Nissan Frontier and Nissan Murano, in a tie with the Ford Explorer) each receive two awards. In addition, the Hyundai Genesis also receives an award. Although there are no awards in their respective segments due to an insufficient number of award-eligible models, or insufficient market share of award-eligible models in the segment, these models also perform particularly well: Ford Mustang, GMC Yukon and Porsche 911.

J.D. Power and Associates offers the following tips for consumers regarding vehicle dependability:

  • Consumer perceptions of vehicle quality and dependability are often based on historical experiences or anecdotes and may be out of line with the current reality. Consumers should gather as much information as they can on the latest models from a variety of sources to make an informed decision.
  • Historically, initial quality has been a good indicator of likely long-term dependability. If a model has high levels of quality when new, it is more likely to be dependable over the long term.
  • Vehicle dependability is at an all-time high and resale values are also very high by historical standards. If your vehicle has been properly maintained and is in good working condition, it may be worth more than you think if you are considering trading it in.

The Vehicle Dependability Study is used extensively by vehicle manufacturers worldwide to help design and build better vehicles?which typically translates to higher resale values and higher customer loyalty. It also helps consumers make more-informed choices for both new- and used-vehicle purchases.

The 2012 Vehicle Dependability Study is based on responses from more than 31,000 original owners of 2009 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. The study was fielded between October and December 2011.

ELK GROVE TOYOTA WELCOMES FINDINGS OF NHTSA

ELK GROVE TOYOTA WELCOMES FINDINGS OF NHTSA -NASA REPORT AND THANKS CUSTOMERS FOR THEIR LOYALTY

Elk Grove, CA., Feb. 16,2011 -Elk Grove Toyota  welcomes the findings of the comprehensive ten-month study undertaken by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)  into the electronics in Toyota vehicles.  The report made public on February 8, found no evidence of any electronics problems that could be the cause of reports of unintended acceleration in the automakers' cars and trucks.

The Department of Transportation's press release announcing this report quoted Secretary Ray LaHood:  "We enlisted the best and brightest engineers to study Toyota's electronics systems, and the verdict is in. There is no electronic-based cause for unintended high-speed acceleration in Toyotas."

Mark Fusselman, General Manager, Elk Grove Toyota said:  "All scientific evidence to date confirms what millions of Toyota drivers prove day in and day out: that they can depend upon their vehicles to provide safe, reliable transportation.  The people who know our vehicles best are our customers, and we're grateful to them for standing by us over the past year."

As the study acknowledged, Toyota has already remedied more than 7 million vehicles to address the mechanical features of Toyota vehicles that may contribute to the risk of unintended acceleration.

Electronic throttle control systems have long been standard across the automobile industry because they provide great benefits and have made significant safety advances possible.  These advances include vehicle stability control and traction control, which are among the five accident-avoidance technologies in Toyota's Star Safety System.  The Star Safety System and Smart Stop Technology braking system are now standard on all new Toyota vehicles manufactured for the North American market.

Committed to Customer Care

Elk Grove Toyota has 2 locations and over 200 employees.  Elk Grove Toyota also just celebrated its 40 year anniversary as a Toyota Dealership with Toyota.

"The past year had reaffirmed the value of dealer-provided service and making sure that our customers'  vehicles run in top condition.   The bottom line is that we learned important lessons from last year's experience, particularly about how we communicate with our customers and respond to their needs," Fusselman said.

All new Toyota vehicles also now come with the Toyota Care complimentary maintenance plan with roadside assistance for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first.  "The plan provides peace of mind for our customers, and we are the only automaker in the industry who offers this plan as standard across the entire model range," Fusselman said.

Fusselman said staff at Elk Grove Toyota worked long, hard and extended hours at the height of last years' service campaign.  "We're incredibly grateful to our staff for the amazing work they did to serve our customers as quickly and conveniently as possible," Fusselman said.
"
We will continue working hard to earn our customers' loyalty with an even greater dedication to quality, to customer care and to offering some of the safest cars on the road today."

Reliability
Cars That Will Make It Past 200,000 Miles

Hannah Elliott, 12.08.10, 12:00 PM ET

Want a car that will last a long, long time? Buy a Porsche.

According to Consumer Reports' latest reliability survey, all cars and SUVs made by the Stuttgart, Germany-based automaker are rated average or better when it comes to longevity. One car in particular--Porsche's $47,600 Boxster--stands above the rest. It has the best predicted reliability of any vehicle tested by Consumer Reports this year.

In fact, predicted reliability for 2011 models of the two-seat convertible is expected to be 85% better than average. That's why, along with the Lexus LX and the Toyota Tundra, it makes our list of vehicles you can trust well beyond the 150,000-mile mark.

Behind the Numbers

To compile our list of the cars most worthy of trust over a long life on the road, we scoured Consumer Reports data from its October 2010 reliability survey for all new models in the United States. We selected the top-rated model in each of 10 automotive segments, from pick-up trucks and SUVs to tiny coupes and family sedans.

"Toyotas are very reliable, they still perform very well" despite the massive recalls some models suffered earlier this year, says David Champion, the senior director of auto testing at Consumer Reports. "They're quiet; they're comfortable. The people who have them generally really like the vehicle."

The same can be said for Porsche's Boxster roadster--but that staunch European reliability doesn't apply across the board. Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz are listed among the least-reliable manufacturers this year (the BMW M3 continues to stand out as an exceptionally strong model among these brands). The cars with the worst predicted reliability, according to Consumer Reports data? The Audi A6 3.0T and Jaguar XF.

Government: No electronic flaws in Toyotas

Toyota

WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration's investigation into Toyota safety problems has found no electronic flaws to account for reports of sudden, unintentional acceleration and other safety problems. Government investigators said Tuesday the only known cause of the problems are mechanical defects that have been addressed by previous recalls.

The Transportation Department, which was assisted by engineers with NASA, said its 10-month study of Toyota vehicles concluded there was no electronic cause of unintended high-speed acceleration in Toyotas. The study, which was launched at the request of Congress, responded to consumer complaints that flawed electronics could be the culprit behind Toyota's spate of recalls.

"We enlisted the best and brightest engineers to study Toyota's electronics systems and the verdict is in. There is no electronic-based cause for unintended acceleration in Toyotas," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a statement.

Toyota has recalled more than 12 million vehicles globally since fall 2009 to address sticking accelerator pedals, gas pedals that became trapped in floor mats, and other safety issues. The recalls have posed a major challenge for the world's No. 1 automaker, which has scrambled to protect its reputation for safety and reliability.

Toyota paid the U.S. government a record $48.8 million in fines for its handling of three recalls. The company has said it has not found any flaws in its electronic throttle control systems and said the previously announced recalls have addressed the safety concerns.

LaHood said NASA engineers "rigorously examined" nine Toyotas driven by consumers who complained of unintended acceleration. NASA reviewed 280,000 lines of software code to look for flaws that could cause the acceleration. Investigators tested mechanical components in Toyotas that could lead to the problem and bombarded vehicles with electro-magnetic radiation to see whether it could make the electronics cause the cars to speed up.

A preliminary part of the study, released last August, failed to find any electronic flaws based on a review of event data recorders, or vehicle black boxes.

Despite its findings, LaHood said the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration was considering new regulations to improve safety. They include requiring brake override systems on all vehicles, standardizing keyless ignition systems and requiring event data recorders, or vehicle black boxes, on all new vehicles.

Transportation officials said they would also consider conducting more research on electronic control systems and review the placement and design of accelerator and brake pedals.

In Tokyo on Tuesday, Toyota reported a 39 percent slide in quarterly profit but raised its full-year forecasts for earnings and car sales. It is a mixed picture for the automaker, which is enjoying booming sales in high-growth markets in Asia, Africa and South America, while facing lingering worries about quality lapses in the U.S.

In addition to the recalls, Toyota began installing brake override systems on new vehicles. The systems automatically cut the throttle when the brake and gas pedals are applied at the same time. The company also created engineering teams to examine vehicles that are the subject of consumer complaints and appointed a chief quality officer for North America amid complaints its U.S. division did not play a large enough role in making safety decisions.

Consumer advocates and safety groups raised concerns that flawed electronics could be causing unwanted acceleration in the Toyotas. They have questioned the reliability of the event data recorders studied by the government, saying they could be faulty or fail to tell the whole story of the individual crashes.

Toyota's safety issues received broad attention from the government after four people were killed in a high-speed crash involving a Lexus near San Diego in August 2009.

NHTSA has received about 3,000 reports of sudden acceleration incidents involving Toyota vehicles during the past decade, including allegations of 93 deaths. NHTSA, however, has confirmed just five of them.

Congress considered sweeping safety legislation last year that would have required brake override systems, raised penalties on auto companies that evade safety recalls and given the government the power to quickly recall vehicles. But the bills failed to win enough support, and it remains unclear if Congress will pursue similar legislation before the 2012 elections.

The National Academy of Sciences is conducting a separate study of unintended acceleration in cars and trucks across the auto industry. The panel is expected to release its findings this fall.

Latest Market Intelligence Data Shows Subaru, Mitsubishi Climbing Among Certain Factors of Importance

IRVINE, Calif., Dec. 13, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- According to the latest Kelley Blue Book www.kbb.com Market Intelligence Brand Watch™ study, embattled automaker Toyota has regained the top spot as the most-considered auto brand among new-car shoppers.  Toyota consistently captured the most-considered auto brand title from Q1 2007 through Q3 2009, but then fell to the number-two spot for Q4 2009 through Q2 2010, during which time the company experienced its high-profile recall crisis and domestic auto manufacturer Ford surged ahead to capture the top spot.  In addition to being the most-considered auto brand overall (regardless of segment), for Q3 2010 Toyota is the most-considered brand in the non-luxury sedan/coupe/hatchback and non-luxury SUV/CUV segments, and consideration of Toyota trucks also considerably rebounded this quarter.

For Q3 2010, Ford and Honda (respectively) are hot on the heels of the once again number-one Toyota, with only one percentage point separating these top three brands in overall consideration (regardless of segment) in the latest Brand Watch study.  Rounding out the top five most-considered among the 37 new-vehicle brands tracked in the Kelley Blue Book Market Intelligence study include Chevrolet and Nissan, respectively.  Consideration for Korean automaker Hyundai, which ousted Nissan for the number-five spot last quarter, slipped to sixth place for Q3 2010 as Nissan's consideration gained three percentage points since Q2 2010.

"The latest Brand Watch data from Kelley Blue Book Market Intelligence indicates that Toyota is slowly recovering from its public-perception crisis and regaining a position of prominence in the minds of new-car shoppers," said James Bell, executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com.  "However, whether Toyota will ascend as high as it was before the recall crisis remains yet to be seen.  Hot competition from the likes of Ford, Honda, Chevrolet, Nissan and Hyundai could make it very hard for Toyota to keep a strong lead moving forward."

Overall for Q3 2010, new-car shoppers rank durability/reliability, fuel efficiency, driving comfort, driving performance and safety (respectively) as the top five importance factors while shopping for their next new vehicle (regardless of segment).

Specific to the non-luxury sedan/coupe/hatchback segment, Hyundai consideration maintains a slight advantage at fourth place over fifth-place Nissan, following Toyota, Honda and Ford, respectively.  Additionally, for the first time, Mitsubishi was the top-rated brand for the importance factor of 'cool factor/vehicle image' in this category.

In consideration of the non-luxury SUV/CUV segment, both Nissan and Jeep saw significant increases in consideration over the prior quarter.  In addition, Subaru made its first appearance as the top-ranked brand among the importance factors of safety and versatility/flexibility in this category.

Specific to the luxury sedan/coupe/hatchback segment, BMW has regained the top spot for consideration in Q3 2010, followed by Lexus, Audi, Acura and Mercedes-Benz, respectively.  While Mercedes-Benz places fifth for consideration in this segment, it continues to garner the top rank for most of the factors of importance (driving comfort, safety, interior design/layout, luxuriousness/sophistication, prestige/brand status, family friendliness).

In consideration of the luxury SUV/CUV segment, Lexus remains the most-considered brand for Q3 2010, even though the brand's consideration has been eroding for the last few quarters.  Following Lexus for top consideration of luxury SUV/CUVs are Acura, Cadillac, Lincoln and BMW (respectively).

Ford continues to remain the most-considered truck brand, experiencing a dramatic increase in consideration since Q2 2010.  In addition, the importance factor of safety has edged out driving performance to round out the top factors of importance for trucks (durability/reliability, fuel efficiency, towing/hauling capacity, driving comfort and safety, respectively).

Honda continues to remain the most-considered minivan brand, yet of all minivan brands, only domestic automakers Chrysler and Dodge experienced a slight increase in minivan consideration for Q3 2010 over the previous quarter.

The Q3 2010 Kelley Blue Book Market Intelligence Brand Watch Study was fielded to more than 2,700 in-market new-car shoppers on Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com from July 8 ? September 23, 2010.  Kelley Blue Book's Brand Watch is an ongoing study tracking and trending consumer perceptions, detailing strengths and weaknesses of makes within each segment.  Brand Watch primarily tracks brand consideration, segment consideration, important consideration factors for new-car shoppers, and how brands perform on those important factors.  Kelley Blue Book Market Intelligence has been tracking Brand Watch since 2007.  For Market Intelligence inquiries on any segment or brand, please contact Hwei-Lin Oetken, vice president of market intelligence services for Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com, at 949-267-4460 or hoetken@kbb.com.
