Toyota Brings EV Racer to Pikes Peak

At the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, many vehicles of different shapes, sizes, and powertrains compete on a time-trial run to get to the top. Toyota is no different, though they won't be sending a vehicle like the Toyota Camry out to conquer the Rocky Mountain climb, rather, the Japanese automaker will take an electric vehicle to the race to test out their latest innovations.
The Toyota TMG EV P002 will be put to the test on the long and winding uphill road of Pikes Peak, with the hope that it will give Toyota not only a solid performance, but also so data that they can analyze, and hopefully put to use in new Toyota vehicles down the line.
For those wondering if the EV can handle a grueling climb that the mountain presents, fear not, the TMG EV P002 has plenty of power. With an electric motor that can churn out 350 kW and a top speed of 150 miles per hour, it isn't your average electric vehicle. The powertrain is the same as the previous version of the car, the TMG EV P001, which turned in a good run at the Nurburgring Nordsheleife last year. The difference is in the chassis, which has been totally reworked, giving the Toyota electric car a sporty look that backs up its performance under the hood.
Toyota is saying it wants to treat this as a learning experience, but we'd bet their competitive juices are flowing, even if they might not come out and say it. This is a competition after all.
We'll be sure to let everyone know how the TMG EV P002 performs at the race in July right here on the Elk Grove Toyota blog.
