Toyota Keeps an Eye Out for Everyone on the Road

Who is Toyota keeping an eye out for? The better question is who is Toyota not trying to keep safe these days. Here's a hint, the answer is no one, and nothing proves it more than the Japanese automaker's latest creation: an accident-avoidance system that is targeted at ending pedestrian related collisions.
We here at Elk Grove Toyota think that this new system is an excellent idea. After all, it's one thing for an automaker to look out for those who are behind the wheel, as well as their passengers, but it takes a truly innovative and passionate automaker to extend the scope of their safety efforts to everyone in the vicinity of the vehicle as well.
Designed with specially integrated network of cameras, millimeter-wave radar and microprocessors, Toyota's new system aims to end pedestrian related accidents by calculating what needs to be done in order to avoid the an oncoming collision, and if need be executing the maneuvers before the driver has time to react.
What's more disturbing than the fact that we need a system like this implemented in the new vehicles that we drive, is how frequently these kinds of accidents occur to justify it. Take for instance, the fact that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports data showing more than 4,000 pedestrians being struck in the United States, in 2009 alone. Then, there is the fact that the District Department of Transportation reports that more crashes occur in D.C. crosswalks than in the city's roads.
Luckily, we have Toyota keeping an eye out on everyone. While they haven't announced a firm date for their new accident avoidance system, we can safely say that Volvo should, perhaps, watch their backs. There is a new contender for top safety, and it looks like they're bringing their A game.
